Greetings Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy (SACP) Colleagues,

SACP is affiliated with the American Philosophical Association (APA) and we plan to offer two sessions for scholarly presentations and papers at the annual meeting of the Central Division of the APA.

We are accepting individual paper proposals that will later be grouped into a panel if possible, and entire panel proposals, typically with three or at most four presenters.

Please submit your paper proposal (your name, the title of the paper, and an abstract of 250-300 words)

or

panel proposal (your name and the names of the panelists; the title of the panel, and the abstract of the panel in 250 words; the title of each individual paper plus an abstract of 200 words for each paper)

We are hiring an assistant professor to engage in teaching within the scheme of Liberal Arts and Science to Learn in English of the Institute of Liberal Arts and Science, and in research and administrative activities for both the Center for Applied Philosophy and Ethics (CAPE) and the Graduate School of Letters, Kyoto University.

Job Description:

  1. The assistant professor will teach two courses in each term: Science and Religion and Critical Thinking within the scheme of Liberal Arts and Science to Learn in English of the Institute of Liberal Arts and Science, Kyoto University.

  2.   3. The assistant professor will also be a faculty member of the department of the Graduate School of Letters, Kyoto University, taking charge of the department’s and the school’s research and administrative activities.
  4. The assistant professorship will start from 1st April 2019 and last for two years, with the first six months being a probation period. The term of the position can be renewed for a further one year.

Qualifications:
All candidates must have a PhD in philosophy at the time of his/her application. Their area of specialization is expected to be in philosophy (an AOS in applied philosophy or ethics is desired but not necessary), while their area of competence should be in philosophy of science and/or religion and critical thinking. They should have the English language capabilities necessary to teach the two courses. Japanese communication skills are also essential for a successful applicant.

Compensation:

  1. Working hours and other working conditions are in conformity with the regulations of Kyoto University on working hours, holidays and vacations. The free time system for professionals is to be applied.
  2. The amount of salary is also in conformity with the regulations of Kyoto University on salaries of non-tenure faculty members.
  3. The employee is to be a member of the national public service Mutual Aid Association. He or she is also to take out employment insurance and industrial accident compensation insurance.

CALL FOR PAPER AND PANEL PROPOSALS

2019 Eastern Division Meeting of the American Philosophical Association

Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy (SACP) group sessions at the 2018 Eastern Division Meeting of the American Philosophical Association (APA).

The Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy welcomes proposals for our panels at the American Philosophical Association’s Eastern Division meeting. Proposals regarding any aspect of Asian or comparative philosophy are welcome.

Individual paper abstracts should be 200-300 words in length and complete panel abstracts should include a 150 word introduction to the theme of the panel, complete with panel title, along with 200-300 word abstracts for each of the papers.  Please include presenter’s name(s), email(s), and institution(s).

Guidelines for paper/abstract submission:

  1. We encourage submission of either individual papers or full panel proposals, on any topic in Asian and/or Comparative Philosophy. All paper and panel proposals will be considered.
  2. Feel free to submit a longer abstract (300-500 words) or to include a completed paper with your abstract. The presentation time for each paper will be between 20 and 30 minutes.
  3. Please let us know if you are simultaneously submitting a separate proposal to other Asian philosophy groups for the same APA meeting. We give preference to single submissions.
  4. Membership of the SACP is not required for consideration or acceptance, but we ask that you be a current SACP member by the time we submit the session information to the APA.

CFP: Raimon Panikkar mini-symposium at AAR

Call for Papers

SACP Symposium: Celebrating the Centenary of Raimon Panikkar’s Birth,

Denver, November 16, 2018

In addition to the regular SACP panel, the SACP will host a mini-symposium on the intercultural thought of Raimon Panikkar at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion in Denver. This symposium is made possible by private donations. It will take place on November 16 (Friday), the day before the official beginning of the AAR program in order to avoid any scheduling conflict.

Raimon Panikkar’s thought covers a wide range of spectrum from theology to philosophy, culminating in the praxis of diatopical dialogue that aims at facilitating interreligious and intercultural mutual understanding and mutual enrichment. The purpose of this year’s symposium is to celebrate the centenary of Panikkar’s birth, as well as the book launching of Raimon Panikkar: A Companion (Cambridge: James Clark, 2018), ed., Peter Phan & Young-chan Ro.

The themes of this year’s symposium is:

Philosophical (and theological) critique of Panikkar’s interreligious intercultural thought, especially in dialogue with various religious, including philosophical and secular traditions.

SACP Call for Papers

2018 AAR Annual Meeting, Denver

November 17-20, 2018

Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy is affiliated with the AAR as a “Related Scholarly Organization” (RSO), in that capacity we are invited to offer panels at the annual meeting (starting this year they are called “Other Events,” instead of “Additional Meetings”).

The SACP will host at least one panel for this year’s AAR meeting. There is a possibility that the panel will be scheduled on Saturday (11/17) in the morning, before the start of the official AAR program, unless otherwise requested by you in advance.
