Call for Papers: SACP at AAR in Denver 2022

SACP Call for Papers
2022 AAR Annual Meeting, Denver, CO
November 19-22, 2022

The Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy invites you to submit your paper proposal for the AAR Annual Meeting 2022.

The SACP will host at least one panel. The panel will be scheduled on Saturday (11/19) in the morning time slot, 11:00 a.m. -12:30 p.m.

Depending on the number of proposals, a second panel may be added in the evening on Saturday or Sunday (11/19 or 20), 7-8:30 p.m.

As for the topic of the paper proposal, any timely issue will be welcome. If you are proposing a technical paper steeped in one tradition, please approach it from an “intercultural” perspective, so that other thinkers from other traditions will find your topic accessible and engage in fruitful dialogue and exchanges. If we, as members of the SACP, manage to address the vital issues and concerns of the day, even if anchored in a single tradition but open to dialogue, our time and effort will be spent well.

If it is a panel proposal that you have in mind, please contact the individual members of your panel to submit their proposals each as an independent paper proposal to me. In this case, indicate that it is part of a panel, following your name. There is no blanket acceptance policy of the paper, even if it is part of a panel.

     The deadline for the submission of the proposal is June 15 (Wednesday), 2022.

SACP Announcements

Dear Members of the SACP,

I have a few important announcements, made on behalf of the Board of the SACP.

  1. In light of uncertainty about the direction of the pandemic, the 52nd annual meeting of the SACP will be postponed again until October 2023.
  2. Because this is the second postponement, we ask that anyone interested in presenting at the October 2023 meeting submit NEW abstracts by 1 February 2023, even if you wish to speak on the same topic for which you previously submitted an abstract.
  3. The 52nd annual meeting of the SACP will still be hosted by the University of San Francisco, on the theme of “One and Many,” with keynote speaker Hei-sook Kim (Ewha Womans University).
  4. My term as President ends this year (December 2021). As per the SACP bylaws, our current Vice President, Sarah Flavel, will automatically become President (1 January 2022).
  5. Finally, let us stress again that the president and other members of the SACP Board will NEVER ask you individually for money, gift cards, or credit card numbers. If you are in doubt about the authenticity of any personal email message or text, ask to speak to the person in question via phone or video chat to confirm their identity. (Read up on “phishing” if you are not already familiar with this con.)

Thank you to everyone for your help and support during my term as President!

Best wishes,

Bryan (on behalf of the Board)

International Society for Chinese Philosophy Summer 2022 ISCP Shanghai International Conference

We all truly look forward to the Summer 2022 ISCP Shanghai International Conference (postponed from 2021 due to Covid-19) as opportunities to learn from one another and making personal connections. However, considering the ever-changing nature of the pandemic, the difficulty and safety of international travelling (visa, pre-boarding test, quarantine, flight availability and high cost associated with it, etc.), in consultation with the hosting university (East China Normal University), the board has approved holding the conference with a hybrid platform — virtual and in person concurrently. For participants within the Mainland China and scholars outside of China who can and would like to travel to Shanghai, they certainly can participate the conference in person. For those who prefer to participate virtually, they can do so.

The conference registration fee will be lowered because of this new hybrid format. For non-ISCP members, the conference registration fee will be US$50 (approx. RMB300¥); for ISCP members whose dues are paid up to date, it will be free. We encourage current members to renew their membership and interested colleagues to join ISCP to take advantage of this generous offer.

With this new hybrid platform, we also hope more scholars will consider submitting individual abstract or panel proposals for the conference. The submission deadline is DECEMBER 31, 2021.

General timeline remains the same:
Deadline for submission of abstracts and panel proposals: December 31, 2021
Conference Registration: January 1- May 1, 2022
Communication of acceptance: by February 1, 2022

With warmest regards,

Ann A. Pang-White
Executive Director of ISCP

CFP: ethics of technology and intercultural philosophy

Dear all,

On January 27 and 28, 2022, there will be an international online conference on Intercultural Ethics, with a specific focus on the ethics of technology and intercultural philosophy. Our aim is to bring together the ethical approaches and frameworks from various cultural backgrounds and traditions, in order to organize an intercultural ethical dialogue, especially on (but not limited to) technology and its social and cultural implications.

The conference will be organized by the Ethics of Socially Disruptive Technologies research program: a 10-year program in which 5 universities collaborate to investigate how new and emerging technologies challenge our ethical frameworks and approaches (for more information: see www.esdit.nl). It will be hosted from the University of Twente, the Netherlands. The conference intends to bring together scholars in intercultural philosophy, intercultural ethics, and the ethics and philosophy of technology. In a two-day event we will explore the value and challenges of an intercultural ethical approach to the profound implications of technology for human beings and societies.

Confirmed keynote speaker: Beatrice Okyere-Manu (more keynote speakers will be announced soon!)

We welcome abstract submissions for individual papers and panels:

  • Paper abstracts: 250 words, up to three keywords, and a 250-word bio of the presenter
  • Panel proposals: up to 4 abstracts of 250 words and 3 keywords each; a general panel description (200 words); and a 250-word bio of the presenter.
  • Workshops (sessions with an active role for all participants): description of 500 words.

Important Dates

  • September 22, 2021: Deadline for submission of abstracts
  • October 12, 2021: Notification of acceptance

Dynamic Encounters between Buddhism and the West

University of Cambridge Postgraduate Online Conference 21-22 June 2021

This conference seeks to explore historical and contemporary dialogues between Buddhism and the West, while also contemplating ways of opening up new conversations. With an appreciation of the value of interdisciplinarity, we aim to bring together scholars from diverse fields to both share and enhance their unique perspectives. In today’s era of globalisation, dialogue between different cultures is a daily occurrence. The last century in particular has produced a dynamic exchange of ideas between Buddhism and the West. Important exchanges have occurred in myriad areas of intellectual life, ranging from spiritual endeavours to the pursuit of a scientific understanding of the mind. In Western universities, Buddhist Studies is a growing field, and thus there is a continuous interaction of scholars. In addition, outside of academia, interest in Buddhism as a religion and practice has been steadily growing, along with the number of Buddhist institutions.

In the context of globalisation, the encounter between Buddhism and the West is generally understood as a modern phenomenon. However, throughout history, from distant antiquity to recent past, the dialogue between Buddhism and the West has been pervasive and dynamic. This conference intends to uncover some of these exchanges and suggest possibilities for future dialogues.

Possible topics for papers can include, but are not limited to:

  • views of Western intellectuals on Buddhism and of Buddhist intellectuals on the West over the course of history;
  • similarities and differences between modern approaches to Buddhism and those of the past;
  • mutual influence in philosophy;
  • artistic expressions: genres, techniques and topics;
  • Christianity and Buddhism;
  • dynamic encounters in films;
  • interculturality in literature;
  • issues of comparative jurisprudence between Buddhist legal codes and Western doctrines.

This conference is aimed at postgraduate students. Since Buddhism is an umbrella term that picks out and is associated with a plurality of religious beliefs, politics, philosophical positions, arguments, practices, and artistic works, this conference is very broad in scope, with possible contributions ranging from philosophy, film studies to law, this leaves the conference open to a wide range of students to make a contribution from their own research field.

Please send abstract (500 words) and CV to: dynamicencounters2021@gmail.com by 9 May 2021.
