The Northeast Asia Council (NEAC) of the Association for Asian Studies, in conjunction with the Japan-US Friendship Commission, supports a variety of grant programs in Japanese studies designed to facilitate the research of individual scholars, to improve the quality of teaching about Japan on both the college and precollege levels, and to integrate the study of Japan into the major academic disciplines in the United States.

  • Individual applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and institutional applicants must be located within the USA. In general, seminars/workshops/conferences must be held in the United States, however, an exception may be made if the host institution is a U.S. non-profit organization and the event is relevant to the U.S.-Japan bilateral relationship. Seminar/workshop/conference grant fund supported speakers or participants must be either U.S. citizens/permanent residents or Japanese nationals only.
  • Only one Japan grant application per individual will be accepted in any one grant period. Multiple applications for different categories will not be entertained.
  • Graduate student applicants in any grant category (where eligible) must provide an advisor recommendation letter—emailed directly to the AAS by the advisor—in order to be considered for grant funding.
  • Award notification will be made by late April 2017. Projects must begin after May 1, 2017 and be completed by April 30, 2018 to be considered.
