Position: Tenure Track Professorship (career level I – Associate Professor)
Academic unit: School of Humanities
Study Area: Asian Studies
The position will be filled by 01.09.2020

Description of the field of the academic work: Chinese studies with a strong theoretical background in a subfield of social sciences or the humanities.

Current strengths of TLU in the field of the position: Teaching Asian Studies has been the area of responsibility for TLU, which is the only university in Estonia to offer full degree programmes (BA, MA and PhD levels) in Asian Studies. TLU provides the strongest language base in Estonia in key Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, Arabic), starting from BA level, which is the pillar and strength of TLU’s regional studies approach.
TLU is also the host of the Confucius Institute, which is responsible for teaching the Chinese language, and King Sejeon Institute that teaches Korean language and popular culture.
In terms of research, the Asian Studies programme of TLU has established itself internationally as a strong centre of classical East Asian cultures (primarily philosophy and literature), and has recently developed a research focus on mainland Southeast Asian (SEA) and SEA-China cross-regional developments. A Professor of Chinese Studies with a background in anthropology, sociology, philosophy, literature, cultural studies or related fields, will give the TLU programme a good standing in the field.

The strategic importance of the position within the School and how it relates to the other planned tenure and non-tenure positions: Preference will be given to candidates with a broad interdisciplinary range of research interests, and a strong theoretical background in at least one subfield of the social sciences and/or the humanities. The content of the particular courses and student supervision of the Professor in Chinese Studies will depend on his/her academic background and specific research focus but he/she is expected to teach an MA course “Chinese Society and Politics.” The professor will also be contributing to the School’s general courses for MA and PhD students. He/she will join the teams of research and is expected to lead and take the Chinese studies at TLÜ to a new level.

The relevance of the field to the development priorities of TLU, Estonia and Europe: Since the release of the report by the Estonian Parliament’s Foreign Commission, titled “Estonia’s opportunities and interests in Asia until 2025” (2012), Estonia has been gradually developing its capacity to understand, study and engage with Asia. At TLU and the School of Humanities, teaching and researching Asia has been one of the focus areas supported by the Ministry of Education and Research.
