The Asian Studies Development Program at the East-West Center in Honolulu is will be hosting two summer faculty and curriculum development programs that may be of interest. The first program of the summer is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Fulltime and adjunct faculty as well as graduate students are welcome to apply; participants will each receive a $3300 stipend, making the program cost neutral. The second program—our annual, flagship program on Infusing Asian Studies into the Undergraduate Curriculum—is open to individual adjunct/fulltime teaching faculty and administrators, as well as two- to three-person institutional applications.
Islam in Asia: Traditions and Transformations
Dates: June 12- July 7, 2017

This multidisciplinary NEH-supported summer institute will offer four weeks of context-rich and critical engagement with Islamic traditions, examining their origins and how they have shaped and been shaped by the cultures and societies of South and Southeast Asia. The first three weeks of the program will consider how Islam historically addressed both personal and social needs in ways that were inseparable from the dynamics of intellectual exchange, artistic production, social organization and politics. The final week will examine the complex interplay of Islam and globalization in the context of contemporary Asia. Participants will receive a stipend of $3300 to help defray costs for travel, housing, meals and incidentals. Lodging will be available at the East-West Center guesthouse, Lincoln Hall.

Infusing Chinese Studies into the Undergraduate Curriculum

This multidisciplinary, two-week faculty development program offers undergraduate educators opportunities to interact with leading Asian studies experts in an intensive program of lectures, discussions, film screenings, and cultural events. The program is designed to assist individual faculty members and institutional teams develop course curricula and strategies for Asian studies program development. The 2017 program will be directed by Peter Hershock (East-West Center) and will include a thematic overview of Chinese history; sessions on Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism; discussions of pre-modern and contemporary Chinese art; a session on 20th century Chinese literature and film, and sessions on the political economy, social transformation and cultural dynamics of contemporary China. Participants will receive lodging in the East-West Center faculty guesthouse and their home institutions are asked to cover airfares and a program fee of $350.
